Lifeboat Called To First Rescue Of 2016

lifeboat May 2015St Mary’s Lifeboat crew had their first shout of 2016 yesterday.

RNLB The Whiteheads was called out at 1.47pm to a French single-handed yacht Cap Des Palmes that suffered structural damage near Bishop Rock lighthouse.

Scilly’s RNLI Press Officer Steve Watts described the weather at the time as “horrific” with gale force South Easterly winds and torrential rain.

The lifeboat gave the stricken vessel a slow tow back to St Mary’s although the strong winds caused more problems during the procedure as the yacht’s mainsail blew up over the coach roof.

Once back in St Mary’s Harbour, the Y lifeboat and three crew went to assist the yachtsman to untangle and stow the mainsail.

Coxwain on the rescue was Pete Hicks, his first shout since taking over from Stuart Hitchens in January.
