Veterans’ Gig Project Looking For Islanders’ Support

Great Big Cornish Gig Project 2016Every year the World Pilot Gig Championships sees a handful of new boats enter for the first time.

But this year will see a very special gig taking part.

It will be built and rowed to the islands as part of the Great Big Cornish Gig Project and handed over to the Help for Heroes crew.

It’s being funded by the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant Scheme and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

Project manager Mike Selwood from the museum is visiting Scilly this week and would like to meet islanders who can help with the project.

The gig is being built by wounded, injured and sick veterans and serving personnel, working with a team of expert boat builders led by Andrew Nancarrow.

When it’s built, the gig will be rowed by the veterans in time for Gig Weekend in May and handed over to the Help for Heroes team, who will compete in the championships.

Mike’s giving a presentation on Wednesday 3rd February from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in the Church Hall and again on Thursday 4th February from 11.00am to 12.00 noon.
