Scilly has been promoted as a destination to tour operators, journalists and travel writers at the UK’s biggest trade-only tourism show.

Today is the final day of the World Travel Market at the Excel Centre in East London. Since Monday around 50,000 visitors have attended the exhibition.

Scilly has been part of a joint display involving tourist boards across the Westcountry, from the Cotswolds to the Islands.

The South West is the only region attending the show, following a £5m government cash injection to market the area.

Florence Wallace from Visit Wiltshire has been on the stand answering press and tour operator enquires on Scilly’s behalf.

She says destinations working collaboratively like this to promote the best product within their areas helps target the international market.

Florence says there’s little point in having stand-alone displays for each local authority at a show like this, because it means nothing to overseas travel buyers and working together benefits everyone.

Islands’ Partnership Executive Director David Jackson attended on Tuesday.

He says that the government money will be used to showcase the South West at a number of international promotional events and that will help Scilly.

He says it’s part of a series of exhibitions including Visit England’s North American show last month and a Scandinavian promotion planned for December.

David says the South West should stand out in front of overseas buyers at the massive trade show.
