Methodists Launch Search For Scilly’s Next Minister
Methodist church leaders are hoping to find a replacement for the islands’ current minister, Reverend Charlie Gibbs, when he retires in 2016.
But the most senior figure within Methodism in England says he’d still like to see closer working between Scilly’s Methodists and Anglican churchgoers, whether Rev Gibbs is replaced quickly or not.
A significant donation means Scilly’s Methodist minister position is supported for the next few years.
But President of the Methodist Conference, Rev Steve Wild, says the challenge will be finding someone who wants to take on the role rather than one of funding.
He says the church is currently 37 ministers short over the whole of the UK.
Steve says the islands’ Christians are on the same side and should overlook some minor differences. He says he’d like to see them all working more closely together.
Steve applauds proposals to remodel St Mary’s Methodist Church as a space that the wider community could use.
In some areas it has helped to increase local interaction and engagement with the church.
And Rev Wild says it’s likely that there’ll be cash for Scilly to help bring about the structural changes for a more open-plan building.
