Annual Mal De Mer Visit Ends In Draw
The annual visit by the mainland-based Mal de Mer team resulted in a draw this year.
It was the Mal’s 83rd anniversary trip to the islands, bringing a 37-strong group for a week of competition.
Organiser Jeremy Chadwick said the average age of the team was “hugely reduced” thanks to four new younger members including an ex-Olympian Kayaker who flew in from his home in South Africa to join their ranks
Jeremy says the camaraderie and good humour began as soon as they set foot on the islands.
He says it’s “a great testament to the nature of the very mixed bunch of chaps thrown together that make up the Mals, especially as many never meet outside of Scilly!”
The final scoreboard showed a “very friendly” 10-10 draw over the course of the week, although Jeremy says the cancellation of the gig racing probably saved the Mals from overall defeat.
He says he’s grateful to all those islanders that helped make it such a unique week.
