No Budget Information For Council’s Biggest Committee
Councillors who run Scilly’s airport, roads, waste and water policies were left without financial information to guide their decision-making yesterday.
The Chairman of the high spending Transport, Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Robert Dorrien Smith, explained that Council officers had not tabled the expected budget monitoring report.
Robert called it a “potentially serious shortcoming.”
Senior Officer Craig Dryden was asked why the financials hadn’t been prepared.
He explained that the budget contained “some errors” and it would “be confusing” if it was circulated to members.
Cllr Marian Bennett asked whether the committee Chairman had discussed these problems with accounts staff.
Cllr Dorrien Smith said he met with the finance officers on Friday after staff advised that the budget data couldn’t be produced for the meeting.
He said he’d, “been made aware of the position” although he “hadn’t seen any figures.”
It’s hoped that members will be given an indication of how the finances are by early December.
