No Budget Information For Council’s Biggest Committee

Councillors who run Scilly’s airport, roads, waste and water policies were left without financial information to guide their decision-making yesterday.

The Chairman of the high spending Transport, Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Robert Dorrien Smith, explained that Council officers had not tabled the expected budget monitoring report.

Robert called it a “potentially serious shortcoming.”

Senior Officer Craig Dryden was asked why the financials hadn’t been prepared.

He explained that the budget contained “some errors” and it would “be confusing” if it was circulated to members.

Cllr Marian Bennett asked whether the committee Chairman had discussed these problems with accounts staff.

Cllr Dorrien Smith said he met with the finance officers on Friday after staff advised that the budget data couldn’t be produced for the meeting.

He said he’d, “been made aware of the position” although he “hadn’t seen any figures.”

It’s hoped that members will be given an indication of how the finances are by early December.

I doubt if the Chair would tolerate that situation from the finance controller working for his multi million £ private enterprises.

So, how can he accept this for the high spending and high risk Transport, Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee that has a track record of financial volatility and overspending that he is responsible for?

Is it because it’s our money at stake and not his?

Given that the airport is only going in one direction, are there any ISSCo shareholders making decisions about the future of the airport?

I’d hazard a guess that there are Mr D.

One assumes that councillors were not stupid enough to take any decisions at this meeting, it’s about time that someone called time and disbanded this inept team and that its toothless captain was banished to the sidelines for good.

Cast your minds back a couple of years and imagine how the Keeper of The Relics would have reacted if financial information had been withheld from any meeting she was a member of! The lady would have achieved orbit, as it is she has put the ‘sham’ in shambles.
I do not know how she and her clique can sleep at night they should be utterly ashamed.
