‘Incredible’ Response To Refugee Appeal In Scilly
On Saturday, Radio Scilly announced that Hugh Town clothes store 49 Degrees was collecting clothing, toiletries and emergency aid for the Syrians fleeing Islamic State.
Georgia May says her office has quickly filled up with bags and boxes.
She’s made contact with a charity called ‘Kos Kindness’ and islanders’ donations will be sent direct to aid workers in the field.
Georgia says shoes and personal hygiene items would make welcome donations but you can drop off anything that you think would be appropriate.
And with winter on the way, she says warmer items like hoodies and blankets will be well received.
Georgia says there have been some harrowing pictures on the news over the last week, particularly of children, and she feels she had to help.
She’s grateful to the Steamship Company, who are covering the freight costs to the mainland, but sending the goods on to Greece will be expensive.
An 8kg box will cost £53 to deliver and some locals have kindly made cash donations to meet those carriage costs.
If you have any goods, you can drop them at the shop today and Georgia says they’re hoping to send the items tomorrow.
