Redwings To Feature In New Scilly Maritime Festival

redwings tresco tackScilly will be in the sailing spotlight in one year’s time and the islands’ redwing fleet will be at the centre of a new event, a Maritime Festival.

Keith Buchanan has just returned from their annual championships in Looe.

The event moves to Scilly next year and from 20th August 2016, redwing sailors from Tenby, Looe, North Devon and Brittany will compete for a week around our islands.

There could be as many as 30 redwings joining the islands’ owned boats on the water, with 10 from Cornwall and 8 from elsewhere

Keith says those numbers would represent the largest get-together of the redwings since the 1950s.

Following the week of redwing racing, they’ll be joined by more traditional boats, such as tall ships and gaffers, for a celebration of sailing, the first of its kind in Scilly since 2007.

Keith says the details of which large boats will visit are still being finalised, but could include the Irene and the Matthew.

The crew of the four redwings that competed last week in Looe returned to Scilly yesterday.

23 boats took to the water during the race week and Keith says the islanders had mixed results.

The highest placed boat from Scilly was the Shag, sailed by Keith and Ned Buchanan, which finished 8th overall.

Redwings are further growing in popularity both here, upcountry and over in France. Keith says there are now 20 redwings in Scilly with 11 in a sailing condition.
