World’s Smallest League Holding Tournament This Weekend

football garrison field sign 1The world’s smallest football league is arranging their biggest event of the year this weekend.

On Sunday there’s a 6-a-side tournament on The Garrison.

Eight teams including groups from the Airport and the Scillonian Club have entered.

But despite the size of our population and the availability of players on a Bank Holiday in our tourism-reliant area, organiser Howard Cole says it’s not been difficult to find footballers who can play.

Howard says if anything, they sometimes have to turn teams away because there are too many signing up.

The players range in age from 16 to 55 and Howard says while some teams will obviously be in a better position to win, it will still be very competitive.

And he won’t be drawn on the time-honoured debate over whether the skill of older players trumps the agility of the younger footballers.

Howard says seven minutes each way doesn’t seem a lot but “fitness is the key” and “with ageing legs” that can be a long time.

The afternoon of football begins at 1pm on Sunday and will finish with the final at around 5pm.
