Judo Club Fundraiser Will Help Youngster Go To Championships

judo club 2012Scilly’s Judo Club members will be hoping for good weather this weekend as they hold their ‘Sunday Funday’ event.

It’s to raise money to help send the youngsters to the Cornish Championships, which are held in Penzance in May and October each year.

One of the organisers, Adrienne Robson, says the club is “quite big at the moment,” with around 60 members and a further 15 looking to join up in September.

And she says if they can raise enough money, they can send a decent sized group to the mainland to compete for the islands.

The championships normally take place on a Sunday, which means travelling over by boat on the Saturday and coming back on Monday morning, with two nights accommodation.

Raising funds will cut down the cost of this for parents.

Adrienne says the club had been approached a few weeks ago to take over the running of the Garrison Sport and Music Festival from the Football Club.

That’s taken place on the August Bank Holiday Sunday for the last two years.

But she says club members felt it was too short notice to take on such a big event.

Instead, they’ve decided to organise a smaller fete on the school football pitch at Carn Gwaval from 2pm to 6pm, with games, stalls, a bouncy castle and face painting.

There’ll also be a car boot and tabletop sale, costing £5 for a pitch, which you can pay on the day.

Adrienne says a licensed bar, barbecue and candyfloss will be available too.

It’s been “all hands on deck” for the nine organisers and she’s hoping that locals will come and support the event.

Anyone willing to make cakes for sale can drop them at Carn Gwaval on the day of the event or at the Papershop on the Saturday.

Adrienne says she just wants people to “come down, have a fun day out and spend some money!”
