Islanders Worried About Penzance Tile Company Orders

hugh town from garrisonIslanders are worried that they’ll loose the money they’ve paid to a Penzance tile retailer, popular with locals, which has suddenly stopped trading.

Rob and Heather Pearson of Hugh Town paid for hundreds of pounds worth of tiles from The Tile Collection back in April.

When the goods didn’t turn up they made repeated calls to their showroom and were assured that the products would be sent.

But in mid-July the store announced through their Facebook page that they’d ceased trading and were calling in a receiver.

But as of yesterday, Companies House data wasn’t reflecting the changed status of the business, Devenish Trading Ltd.

A former Helston councillor, Niall Devenish, owned the company.

Back in 2013, Mr Devenish told Radio Scilly that he had a number of customers on the islands and he was keen to develop business here. We have been unable to contact him by phone or email.

To add to confusion, another tile retailer moved into their Long Rock premises on 1st August and is using the same phone number.

But Andy Grommett of Solo Style says they have no connection with Mr Devenish and when they moved into his vacated unit there was none of his stock on site.

They have been unable to contact him either.

Andy says he’s sympathetic with the plight of islanders who may have lost their money and, as his firm has the same trading accounts and contacts, he’ll try to offer a special deal to residents who can show that they’ve paid for goods not received.
