Citizenship Ceremony For St Mary’s Resident

wanida evansA woman who has made St Mary’s her home will become a UK citizen today.

Wanida Evans, who was born in Thailand, will pledge her allegiance to the Queen at a ceremony at the Register Office at Porthcressa this afternoon.

The event will be presided over by Lesley Thomas.

Wanida says she is excited that the day has finally come when she’ll finally be British.

She says it’s her “dream come true.”

She’s very grateful to her husband Bill and a number of islanders who have helped her through the application process.

And Wanida paid special tribute to Jen and Dan Buffa, with whom she worked at The Wheelhouse for two years, and Tim and Nicky Guthrie.

Tonight, she’s hoping to celebrate with her family, locals and some of her friends who have come over especially for the occasion.

Wanida is hoping to apply for an Open University course.

Back home she was a pharmacist but she couldn’t take that up when she moved here because the qualifications are different and her English wasn’t good enough then.

Now her goal is to pursue a career as a chiropractor.
