Public Event Planned For VJ Day Anniversary In Scilly

armed forces day 2011A special service is being planned for Scilly to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Victory over Japan in the Second World War.

The public event, being organised by the newly formed Scilly branch of the Royal British Legion, will take place in The Park in Hugh Town at 2pm on Saturday 15th August.

It ties in with a number of national commemorations taking place at the same time, including a traditional service and flypast on Horse Guards Parade in London, being attended by war veterans and senior politicians.

The war in Europe ended in early May 1945, but it continued in the Far East until the 14th August. The Japanese finally surrendered following the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
