The St Mary’s Lifeboat was launched at around 10.40pm last night to assist a RIB that got into difficulty to the southwest edge of St Martin’s.

Falmouth Coastguard received a mayday call from the vessel, which ran aground on Broad Ledge whilst it was travelling from St Mary’s to St Martin’s.

There were four people on board the boat at the time.

The lifeboat crew used their ‘Y’ boat to reach the stranded RIB crew, who were taken off their vessel and safely landed at Lower Town.

The RIB was left on the ledge overnight for retrieval in daylight today, when it will be assessed for the extent of any damage.

It’s been a busy time for the St Mary’s RNLI volunteers with four call outs since 25th July.

You’ll be able to talk to the crew about their training and experiences, and take a tour of the Severn Class lifeboat, this evening on St Martin’s.

The boat will be at Higher Town between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
