Cricket: St Martin’s v Tresco & Bryher

st martins cricket pitch sign 2Report by Colin Daly

Under a bright blue sky decorated with sharp edged clouds of intricate design Tresco and Bryher won the toss and decided to bat first in this interisland 25 over match played on St. Martin’s on 2nd August.

L. Hamilton and D. Brown opened the innings with an impressive display and eventually scored 37 and 27 respectively.

J. Rogers then came in and added a further 35 before falling to a spectacular catch, caught and bowled by A. Murpatt.

Tresco and Bryher’s total was a respectable 148 for 7, but the clouds had become more woolly and threatening and indeed a few drops of rain fell.

But the spirits of all were raised by the much-appreciated tea.

St. Martin’s set about this total steadily, falling behind the run rate for some overs. Then J. Benson opened up and the run rate rose. He eventually top scored with 64 not out.

A captain’s innings of 33 sent A. Goddard’s team through the required total in the 23rd over with the loss of 5 wickets.

Fortunately the rain held off until later in the evening after the discussions on the match at the Seven Stones.
