Cricket: St Martin’s v Bays Hill

st martins cricket pitch sign 2Report by Colin Daly

Cricket is so much at the mercy of the weather that at the beginning of last week we thought we might not be able to play our old friends from the Bays Hill touring team.

But the forecast on Saturday said that the main rain would clear through late morning Sunday and so it did.

25 overs were decided on, the visitors lost the toss and were asked to bat first. T. Liley opened the batting and eventually top scored with 53, E Badcock (borrowed from St. Mary’s) was second highest with 18. The side was all out for 126, which looked an achievable total for St. Martin’s to score.

After all enjoyed a sumptuous tea (thanks ladies), L. Strong opened for St. Martin’s and he top scored with 58, J. Benson was second to that with 43. Indeed St. Martin’s were always ahead on the run rate per over.

At the end with overs to spare the run rate dived to introduce a slight flutter among the home team supporters, but a final 4 from J. Morton settled the matter and all set off west for the Seven Stones to refresh themselves and give a final analysis of the match.
