A St Martin’s councillor says locals are delighted with the island’s new rubbish collection service, following the launch of a pilot scheme.

Colin Daly has been pushing for the introduction of the service and he says that our off-islands are the only place in the country without a refuse collection.

He says local councils were originally set up to collect rubbish and St Martin’s had, “finally caught up.”

Islander Joe Morton is managing the service.

Colin says it was impossible for some older and disabled residents to take their rubbish to the waste site under the previous system.

He’s been pressing for the service, to help these people remain in their homes for as long as possible.

And he says he’s been surprised by how popular the pilot scheme has been on the islands among residents of all ages.

Colin says the service will be assessed after six months and a view taken on whether to extend it to the other off-islands.
