Fire Service Called To Moorwell Dump Blazes

fire at moorwell july 2015_1Firefighters were called out to blazes at the Moorwell Dump on two occasions yesterday.

Five crew were dispatched at around 9.45am, when the rubbish pile burst into flames.

The firefighters used the main fire engine and a foam tender from the airport to extinguish the fire. But it ignited again just after 1pm.

The fire broke out in a section of bulky waste that had recently been shredded in preparation for its transportation off the islands.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, although there are suggestions that the material spontaneously combusted.

The Council says they are monitoring the site.

Let’s hope it doesn’t spontaneously combust when it’s out on its sea voyage, no doubt someone has done risk assessment.
