Military Charity Will Benefit From Scilly’s Armed Forces Day Event
The cash was raised from a street collection in the morning and in the afternoon over 100 holidaymakers and residents gathered in the sunshine in the garden of St Mary’s Hall to enjoy a cream tea and Chris Garratt’s jazz band.
The featured charity is a new organisation whose patron is Prince Harry. They aim to support injured service men and women and help them return to the workplace.
Event Chairman Dave Hawkins says that the amount that was raised will be over half the sum required to get a wounded veteran back into employment.
Dave says Armed Forces Day is not primarily about charity fund-raising, but islanders and our generous visitors have always used the day as an excuse to show their gratitude to our military personnel by “digging deep.”
