Lifeboat Called To Sinking Yacht
At around 3.40pm on Thursday, RNLB The Whiteheads went to assist a yacht that had sunk near the Blockhouse on Tresco.
Falmouth Coastguard says a lifeboat crewmember had noticed the vessel was in trouble around 100m off shore.
The lifeboat, under the command of Stuart Hitchens, checked to confirm there were no persons on board and then spoke to the owners who were onshore.
Scilly’s RNLI Press Officer Steve Watt says the lifeboat crew then launched the Y boat. That’s the inflatable kept on board the lifeboat.
The crew tried to tow the yacht closer inshore, into shallow water away from the flooding tide, but as it was on the bottom they could not attach any lines to the hull.
Locals tried to refloat it using buoyancy bags and drums.
