Scilly’s Newest Restaurant Has Opened
A new restaurant has opened on St Mary’s, bringing life to a Hugh Street building that’s been empty for almost four years.
And the owner of ‘Mr B’s Burger and Steak Bar’ inside The Corner House has strong Scilly connections.
Michael Benney’s sister is Linda Wood, so he knows the islands as he’s travelled many times from Cornwall to Scilly over the years.
He says he couldn’t have launched a similar business in his hometown of St Ives simply because leasing a property there would have cost so much.
Michael says St Mary’s is now his permanent home and he’s hoping to trade all year around, although opening hours in the off-season may be restricted to weekends.
Mike worked as a butcher for 15 years and says he’ll make all of his own burgers from Cornish meat.
He’s also worked as the manager and cook of the Royal British Legion Club in St Ives and although he’s unsure whether he’ll have time to join the newly formed St Mary’s group, he’s keen to support them.
And Mike says he’ll warmly welcome Lifeboat crew and supporters. He served as a crewman on the St Ives lifeboat for ten years.
In the last few months another of Mike’s former trades has been useful.
He’s worked in building previously. That’s been helpful, as the empty former Blues Restaurant has taken a lot of work to get ready for opening.
All went well on the opening night, although Mike jokes that he was running around “like Basil Fawlty.”
He served thirty covers, which meant his greatest pre-launch worry, that he wouldn’t get any customers, didn’t materialise.
Mike’s been joined by his son, and his wife will work part-time in the business, splitting her time between Cornwall and the islands.
