Return For Autumn Sporting Fixture

birdwatchers 2A traditional autumn football match between visiting birdwatchers and islanders will return this year after over a decade.

Mainland-based birder Scott Reid says the game was an annual event that many locals and visitors will remember from 15 to 20 years ago.

Scott says he’s been keen to start it up again as an annual fixture for some time.

There had been discussions about a match last year, but timings didn’t work out. Now a date has been set for the game on The Garrison – the 18th October.

The visitors are determined to make their mark on the pitch. Scott says eleven birders have agreed to play and to show that they are serious, they have managed to get a ‘bird news’ company to sponsor and fund new kits.

The birders are planning a couple of training sessions before the game, too.

Scott will be here on holiday in August with his family if anyone wants to talk with him about the fixture. And he says locals interested in playing should contact Andrew Hicks and Kris ‘Spider’ Webb on St Mary’s.
