Armed Forces Day To Be Marked In Scilly

armed forces day 2014_2Armed Forces Day is set to be marked in Scilly after all this year. A lack of willing helpers at a busy time of the year had put a question mark over the day.

There will be an event, but it will be scaled back from the procession and speeches on Holgate’s Green, which have been held previously.

Now, organisers are appealing for at least six locals to come forward as street collectors on the 27th June, to help raise funds for this year’s charity, ‘Walking With The Wounded.’

Stand-in Chairman of the Armed Forces Committee Dave Hawkins says that the volunteers need to be over 16 years of age. And they need to be prepared to collect at designated spots in the town for a two-hour shift between 9am and 1pm.

After that, from 2pm, there’ll be cream teas and live music from the Blue Skies Jazz Band at St Mary’s Hall Hotel.

A raffle will be held there to boost the cash collection for the charity, but Dave warns that they may not be able to hold an Armed Forces Day every year in the future unless more helpers come forward.

He’s concerned that “we will be unable to show our gratitude to the men and women that have given a great deal to the country.”
