Cricket: St Martin’s v Tresco
Report by Colin Daly
The first match of the season is always more hopeful than the last, although the mournful sound of the Round Island fog signal coupled with the mist did its best to dampen spirits.
A 25 over match on Tresco against a team from St Martin’s got the season underway. Tresco won the toss and St Martin’s were in to bat first.
The openers may have been a little rusty but the scoring rate picked up after the initial overs. Captain Tony Goddard top scored with 30 and the visitors were 110 for seven when the overs total was reached.
That did not seem too high a total to get but as is often the case, the reply started in the same tone as those who batted first. And there was a similar total after the 24th over, leaving 8 to win off the last over.
The score was achieved with two fours off the first two balls of the last over.
Tresco’s top scorer was David Hamilton with 35. The sun came out and the players went to check the beer at the New Inn Beer Festival.
