Council Says Ratepayers Not Funding Airport Celebration

airport may 2015The Council says ratepayers are not funding a party being held to celebrate the £4m airport project.

Councillors, selected businesses and prominent locals have been invited for drinks and nibbles at Juliet’s Garden this evening.

Some islanders and councillors have voiced dissatisfaction with the airport scheme, claiming the building is draughty and not finished to a high enough standard. And one councillor has demanded an investigation into finances.

Last month Radio Scilly revealed that the Council’s project was overspent by £580,000, the airport reserves are now depleted and the cost is still increasing.

A further £60,000 is needed to fix the controversial drop off area at the front. Passengers have been tripping up over the high curbs there.

The Council says that this evening’s three hour event to “celebrate the completion of the airport” is being paid for by the Local Enterprise Partnership.

They are funded by European grant money.

In a statement, the Council say it’s being held to highlight all of the projects funded by European cash on the islands.
