Third Time Lucky For Play Festival Winner

maggie perkovic one act play festival 2015It was third time lucky for the winner of this year’s One Act Play Festival on St Mary’s yesterday.

Theatre Club regular Maggie Perkovic lifted the Shirley Smith trophy for her short play ‘We’re Very Proud of Her,’ which tells the story of a young woman coming out to her parents.

But it was down to regular judge, Paul Dodgson, to make the final decision.

Maggie’s play scored joint highest in the voting along with Steve Sim’s contribution, ‘Uptown Abbey.’

Steve’s piece focused on the lives of an upper class family during the First World War, only there was a twist in the tail – it turns out it was all a rehearsal for a Channel 5 series.

Paul praised both plays, but said Maggie had the edge for her uncanny ability to capture the flow of dialogue between the characters in a realistic way.

The audience also enjoyed another episode in the political shenanigans of the fictitious ‘Council of the Isles of Sanity’ written by real-life councillor Gordon Bilsborough, as well as a play about life in Sixties London by event organiser Jenny Byers.

A good crowd filled the Church Hall for the event, the fourth year it’s been run.

Maggie said she was “delighted” with her win.
