Memento Of Association Disaster Up For Auction

silver box associationA memento of Scilly’s biggest shipwreck is expected to create interest at a mainland auction next week.

A Scilly family is selling a silver box engraved with text referring to the sinking of the HMS Association in 1707.

The 1970s work by renowned silversmith Robert Glover is decorated with coins lifted from the wreck.

Assistant auctioneer Rowan Pope says the piece may appeal to people with a Scilly connection or an interest in nautical history.

Rowan says she’s done a thorough search but can’t find another item like it, so it seems to be a one-off.

She says you don’t get as many Scilly related items offered for auction as you might expect, especially of this quality.

It’s one of the finest boxes in the whole sale, she says, and is beautifully made.
