The Gig Weekend atmosphere was dampened on Saturday evening when a rower became unwell and had to be medically evacuated by air.

The RNAS Culdrose helicopter was sent to St Mary’s at around 6.30pm to transfer the Irish rower. He was in a gig on the water as part of the Arklow crew at the time.

The gig was met by a trained cardiac nurse rowing in another crew and emergency vehicles arrived quickly on Town Beach.

He received treatment for a suspected cardiac arrest before being taken to the mainland by air and then by road to Treliske hospital.

The man in his 60s is in an induced coma at Treliske this morning.

The club tell Radio Scilly that they will row today. We all hope he makes a speedy recovery.
