The sport of gig rowing has taken another step towards becoming more mainstream with the launch of a glossy magazine.

Gigrower was launched at Tregarthen’s Hotel last night by the team who provide the website of the same name – regarded as the definitive guide to gig rowing.

Publisher Toby Budd says it will be an annual publication initially but there may be more issues introduced in the future, like a seasonal round up in time for the Newquay Invitation Weekend.

Some newspapers and magazines have ended their prints runs and are migrating to cheaper digital editions.

But Toby feels there’s still a demand for a traditional coffee-table style magazine containing a directory of gigs and clubs.

And he hopes the publication will heighten awareness in the sport of gig rowing. Toby says it’s spreading geographically outside its traditional home in Cornwall and Devon and there’s a demand by gig rowers to be taken more seriously.

The international market is also becoming important, with more gig clubs springing up around the world.

That shows the sport has “something about it that appeals to people,” says Toby.
