Lottery Grant Will Help Scilly’s Guides Get More From Summer Camp

guides cycle challenge Apr 2015St Mary’s Guides will be able to get more from their summer camp this year following a £1,000 grant from the Scilly Lottery.

‘Tawny Owl’ Fiona Robson says the money will go towards a range of activities during their trip to Tolmers Camp in Hertfordshire this summer, including a day trip to London.

The guides will visit Buckingham Palace and possibly a Thames river cruise to see the Tower of London.

Fiona says some of the girls have never been to the capital, something most mainland youngsters can do in a simple day trip.

And she says these trips are vital in helping the girls socialise within the wider circle of Guides units across the country and to avoid our islands’ group becoming isolated.

The coach up to Tolmers and back will cost £2,000. The girls have raised the cash for that with their recent all night sponsored cycle ride, mirroring the distance to the camp and back.

Fiona says earlier in the evening, the girls were even baking cakes in their breaks from cycling, to sell the next day.

She says they are a great bunch of girls, with devoted leaders, and she’s delighted that they’ve got the grant.
