St Martin’s Pulling Out The Stops For Gig Weekend

st martinsfrom aboveSt Martin’s could be the community with the greatest percentage of locals involved in the World Pilot Gig Championships this year.

The island, with just 135 residents, has two gig clubs entering and three gigs taking part.

Adam Morton says the Iron Maid will be on the water for the men’s races.

They’ll finalise their crew at the last minute, possibly as late as the night before the first race and some rowers could be ‘borrowed’ from St Mary’s. Adam says, “taking part is the main thing.”

The island’s rowing club will enter the championships separately in the Galatea.

Chairman Barney McLachlan says it can be a challenge to get people to commit to row each week, but “everyone’s up for the championships.”

He says that a third St Martin’s gig will be out on the water too. Clevedon are borrowing Dolphin.

This year Barney won’t be as closely involved but he has a valid reason. He became a dad for the second time this week with the birth of his daughter Olivia.
