Surfboat Challenge Will Raise Cash For Cancer Research

scilly surf boat challengeA group of four women rowers are planning to cross from Scilly to Sennen to raise cash for Cancer Research UK at the end of June.

The members of the Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club became good friends at last year’s World Surfboat Championships in Montpellier, France.

Paula Bright says none of the women has ever been that distance in a surfboat and it’s likely to prove a tough challenge.

But although they’re all relatively inexperienced, she says they are planning their journey meticulously and will have a support boat to accompany them.

They’ll also have a window of one week in which to do their trip, so they can catch the best weather.

Paula says maintaining a 7-knot speed should get them to the mainland in six to eight hours, although she says that’s “a bit of an unknown” because gig crews rowing the same crossing have taken much longer.

And as the challenge date approaches, Paula says the women are feeling a range of emotions.

She says they’re all “blissfully ignorant” at the moment but they realise they need to up their practice rows from the current three hours.

They hope to leave St Mary’s sometime around the 26th June.
