Scilly’s Guides Pedalling Through The Night

guides car wash 2014Scilly’s Girl Guides are preparing to pedal through the night from Friday into Saturday to raise cash for their annual camp.

The girls want to attend the Tolmer Scout and Guide facility in Hertfordshire.

Their visit will include outdoor activities, water sports and a day trip to London but the transport costs are likely to push the cost over £1,000.

Each of the youngsters is already contributing £100 and they hope to raise the rest of the money this weekend.

Wez Swain has calculated the distance from Land’s End to the camp as 704 miles. District Guides Commissioner Jenny Erentraut says the girls will take it in turns to cover that distance using three gym bicycles.

They’ll start at 6.30pm on Friday evening and they expect to take 18 hours to finish.

Jenny says there are three teams doing half an hour each, which means the girls can rest or sleep in between sessions on the bikes.

She says the twelve Guides are very enthusiastic about the challenge with one raising over £200 in sponsorship already.

And she says the girls are not fazed by the thought of staying up all night. They’ve previously done something similar on a night hike, says Jenny.

The Guides would welcome support from locals and they intend to carry on peddling during the charity shop session on Saturday morning, when islanders can offer them words of encouragement and hopefully some cash.

They’ll host a coffee morning in the Church Hall, starting at 9.30am on Saturday.
