Award Winning Pub Menu Being Rolled Out To Scilly

atlantic inn sign 2015St Austell Brewery has won a prestigious pub menu award. And islanders will have a taste of it from today.

The Atlantic Inn is one of six public houses within the Cornish chain to offer the choices that won the Best Pub Menu title at Restaurant Magazine’s Development Chef Awards.

Nick Hemming devised it and yesterday he visited St Mary’s to help the staff prepare for the new options.

He says he is proud that a smaller, local group fought off strong competition from brewery giants like Punch Taverns and Greene King.

Nick says he entered their new coastal menu, which features fresh seafood like crab and lobster, into the awards based on its performance at three pubs. They saw an 80% increase in sales.

Nick says the judges awarded his menu the top prize because it’s centred on fresh local ingredients rather than trying to be trendy.

St Austell’s top-selling dish is fish and chips, but he says the secret is sourcing the fish, and making the batter fresh.

Nick says it was important for staff on St Mary’s to understand the vision so there’s consistency across all mealtimes and all six pubs that serve the menu.

He says when chefs are involved in that process, they’re much keener to get it right.
