Two Island Transport Operators Up For Cornwall Business Awards

The Spirit of St Agnes

Two operators of boat services in Scilly, one large and one small, have been selected as finalists in the Cornwall Business Awards for their online work.

The Steamship Company has been nominated for the Best Website in the Region.

And John Peacock has been selected because of his use of superfast broadband to improve efficiency at St Agnes Boating.

If John wins during the event on 14th May, it won’t be the first time that his use of technology has been recognised.

Back in November he was given the Get Set For Growth award for his software that reduces admin by automatically reporting passenger numbers to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

John’s system allows locals to book a special boat online and for passengers to join that trip, so everyone’s fare becomes cheaper. He says that makes commuting to St Mary’s an affordable option.

The use of IT also offers bulk booking by locals and visitors, where they can pay for multiple trips in one go.

And as Wi-Fi is now available alongside quays, John’s wheelhouse has become a floating office, allowing him to access documents stored online in the ‘cloud’ rather than on paper.

He thinks wireless access could provide the way ahead, especially with our poor mobile phone internet provision.

John says making transport as easy as possible will hopefully support the upward trend in passenger numbers that he’s seen in recent years.
