Three crewmembers were rescued from a boat following an incident between Scilly and Land’s End last night.

The men suffered burns after they were splashed with concentrated nitric acid.

One of the men on board the Panamanian registered vessel got the chemical in his eyes.

Falmouth Coastguard were contacted at around10pm and dispatched the RNAS Culdrose helicopter to airlift the men off the vessel, which was in the southern part of the Lands’ End traffic separation zone at the time.

But the sea and weather conditions were so rough, the boat had to move into Mount’s Bay before the men could be rescued.

All three were taken to Treliske Hospital at around 3am.
