Money Offered For Veterans To Attend VE Day Celebrations

new war memorialScilly’s Second World War veterans are unlikely to be able to use of a government grant to attend VE day celebrations in London.

Earlier this week, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander offered to pay travel costs for former service personnel and their carers to a thanksgiving ceremony in May.

Mr Alexander hoped the fund, created from government fines, would ensure veterans “from the Scilly Isles to the Shetlands” could come together to celebrate 70 years since the end of the war.

They’ve set aside £200 per applicant but HM Treasury confirmed to Radio Scilly that islands’ residents would be able to apply for additional funding.

Richard Larn says there are 89 former armed forces personnel on the islands but few who served in the war.
