Free Car Scrapping For Scilly Residents Continues

richard handIslanders can continue to scrap their unwanted vehicles for free.

St Mary’s-based freight handler Richard Hand has renewed the service, which means he’ll collect your old car from any island and despatch it to Cornwall for collection.

Richard says there’s not a lot of money in the scrap value of vehicles at the moment and some mainland drivers can pay over £100 to have their car taken away.

He’s forged new agreements with two recycling organisations, with each one receiving specific vehicle makes. Richard says you just need to call him and he’ll advise which company to use.

And he says islanders may be surprised that he sends up to 50 cars back to the mainland for scrap every year.

Richard has also renewed a contract for collection and shipping of old white goods. Again that’s free to the householder.

The new deals come as Richard is celebrating his 25th year of trading.

He started on his own with some help from a Prince’s Trust loan and has grown the business to employ six full and part-time staff.

Since 1989 he’s added national courier representation and skip hire to his services and he’s recently partnered with Blackwell Building Services to remove waste from the Moorwell dump.

Richard says sometimes history repeats itself. Soon after he started in business, he worked on the St Mary’s Quay widening, a project that’s happening again 25 years on.

Earlier this year, the Steamship Company bought his competitor, Island Carriers.

Richard says he’ll carry on as normal as islanders value having a choice of carrier. And he says his plans for a birthday celebration are on hold, but he’s not complaining.

He says it’s because of a very busy winter.
