Scilly’s Army Cadets have been talking to the world – and without going online!

At the weekend, 22 young islanders were trained in basic radio procedures by a mainland instructor who came over for the session.

It was the first stage in their Signals course and the cadets used a high frequency base station on the Garrison to talk to cadet units upcountry.

They also spoke with people in Latvia and Lithuania, and several calls made it to an air base in America.

Cadets Captain Tony Smith says their next level of radio training will on marine band and HF radios.

The cadets are going to St Mawgan for further training over the first weekend in April. Then the junior cadets will attend a week long camp back at St Mawgan in May.
