Islands’ Tourism Chief Welcomes £5m Funding Package

david jackson islands partnershipScilly’s tourism chief has welcomed the ‘lead role’ that the Islands’ Partnership will play in deciding how £5m worth of funding to promote regional tourism will be spent.

Deputy PM Nick Clegg announced the cash during his visit to Cornwall yesterday.

It will be used to encourage overseas visitors, particularly residents of Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

It’s likely transport links between Bristol, Exeter and Newquay and promotion of the Paddington to Penzance sleeper train service will form part of the spend.

Islands’ Partnership Executive Director David Jackson will join his tourism counterparts in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset in shaping the strategy and identifying priorities.

David says it’s “fantastic news.”

He’s going to the mainland to meet with VisitEngland next week, “to ensure Scilly is well placed to take advantage of this great opportunity.”
