Reopening Of Tresco’s St Nicholas Church To Be Celebrated This Sunday

tresco st nicholas churchAll of Scilly’s Anglican Church congregation will be encouraged to worship together at the renovated St Nicholas Church on Tresco this Sunday.

Improvements include the reslating of the roof and dealing with damp walls in the Grade II listed building.

There’s a new sound system to assist worshippers with impaired hearing and the building appears lighter inside with some white walls introduced. The alabaster in the sanctuary has been restored and there have been renovations to the wooden floor.

Specialists have flown in from Falmouth to retune the organ and the churchyard has had new turf laid.

Canon Paul Miller says there’ll be a boat from St Mary’s at 9.45am, ahead of the 11am Thanksgiving service

Paul says there won’t be any other Anglican services on the islands on Sunday because they’re trying to get everyone over to Tresco.

He says the congregation has been very supportive of the project and he’s hoping they’ll stay on after the service for some lunch.

Canon Miller believes it’s a great achievement for the islands to get over a quarter of a million pounds from the Heritage Lottery to refurbish one of our parish churches.

And he says locals and visitors who have also donated should be proud of their work too.

Lunch is being arranged at the New Inn afterwards. For lunch bookings please contact Eve Cooper, the Tresco Churchwarden, on 422818.
