Islander To Restart St George’s Day Celebration

st georges crossIslanders and visitors born in England and travelling to St Mary’s in April are being encouraged to take part in a celebration of the country’s patron saint.

Last year Maggie Perkovic didn’t hold her traditional St George’s Day event because it clashed with the popular Truro Cathedral choir trip.

Before Christmas, Maggie relaunched the festive readings event and she says she’s determined to restart the patriotic evening on 23rd April.

Recently some commentators and a politician have suggested that flying St George’s cross is tacky.

But Maggie disagrees. She says it’s often associated with hooligans, but people should be proud of their flag.

Anyone who wants to present a poem, song or reading should contact Maggie on 422 029. And she says anything goes, as long as the piece reflects a pride in all things English.

The time and venue will be announced nearer the day.
