Fallen Tree Causes Blackout On Islands

power cable signYesterday’s blackout that affected three islands was caused by a fallen tree.

Western Power Manager Ritchie Christopher says it came down during the strong winds in the Telegraph Road area and it brought down power lines.

The power went off on Bryher, parts of Tresco, McFarlands Down and Porthloo Hill towards the end of breakfast time and although most properties were reconnected by 10.00am, some homes didn’t get their supply back until around 1.30pm.

Electricity company staff worked in strong winds, squally showers and hailstorms to restore the service.

The outage put Radio Scilly’s FM service off air temporarily. The online web broadcasts were unaffected.
