The Chairman of Peninsula Community Health, the NHS contractor that manages St Mary’s Hospital, says they’ll do more to help find accommodation for health workers in Scilly.

Michael Williams discussed the problems that a lack of year-round rental housing can present in recruitment during a meeting with staff at the hospital.

But he cautions that there “are no quick fixes.”

Only last summer, a candidate offered the midwife position in Scilly had to decline because she couldn’t find a suitable place to live.

Mr Williams spoke with GPs, Council and Healthwatch workers during his trip.

He found that there is a “remarkable degree of consensus amongst all partners” of the need for an integrated approach to planning hospital, nursing and home care provision in the future.

And he says that St Mary’s hospital “will be at heart” of that integrated health and social care plan with, ideally, one accountable care provider.

He believes that Peninsula, Council and ambulance staff and volunteer agencies will need to work more closely to make best use of the skills available and to design care around the needs of patients.

And he feels that the hospital staff are enthusiastic about working with partners and that they want to develop their skills through training.

The health care professionals in Scilly are “a great team” who are “determined to make a difference” says Mr Williams, adding, “we will not let them down.”
