One of Scilly’s GPs has visited Sweden to find out how more about their healthcare system, widely regarded as one of the best in the world.

Dr John Garman went as part of an NHS Kernow leadership programme, to learn how the country has brought together their health service with social care, and how they treat an ageing population.

That’s something the coalition government introduced to the UK in 2012, but John says the Scandinavian countries have been doing it for 20 years.

He says this kind of integration has never been done in the UK before, so they’ve had to look to other parts of the world, like Sweden, that have made significant improvements to the delivery of healthcare.

He says the work he saw there was “inspirational” and he felt some of it could be applied to our situation on the islands.
