Charity Offering Wheelchair Use For Islands’ Youngsters

hugh town housesA charity is offering wheelchairs for use by Scilly’s youngsters, whom they say are currently not being catered for by the NHS.

Cornwall Mobility is a not-for-profit organisation based at the Trelikse hospital site in Truro.

Their Chief Executive Edward Trewhella says they want to extend their free loan service to the islands and they’ve just taken delivery of powered chairs suitable for children aged between 2 and 6 years old.

Edward says he appreciates our population is small but says there could be a need for such equipment on the islands.

Two models of wheelchair are available – a ‘Bugsy’ for indoor use and ‘Whizzybug’ for outdoors.

They’re not just suited to youngsters who are differently physically-abled. The chairs, which are controlled by buttons or joysticks, have also been used as a cognitive development tool for children who have learning difficulties.
