Islanders Should ‘Do Their Very Best’ To Welcome Visitors

busy hugh street with visitorsAll islanders should do their very best to welcome visitors, whether or not they work in tourism.

That’s the message from Tim Guthrie who operates the ‘Come2Scilly’ self-catering agency and a Hugh Town B&B.

Tim says many shops and services that year-round locals depend on are here because of our summer visitor levels.

And as numbers have fallen, everyone ought to help give tourists a positive Scilly experience to encourage them to return.

Tim says he was impressed with a local’s reaction when he accidentally walked backwards into a woman while on holiday in Queenstown in New Zealand.

He says he apologised and told her she must get sick of people knocking her off pavements in her own town.

But the woman just smiled and thanked him for coming to Queenstown. She told him they couldn’t afford to live there without the trade of visitors.

There’s been a push towards improving quality within tourism in recent years.

Tim says value for money is important, but he thinks we also need to retain accommodation options for all budgets. He says Scilly already has a very exclusive destination in Tresco and we shouldn’t forget about other potential visitors who want to enjoy our special environment.
