Islands’ Judo Club To Receive Expert Coaching This Weekend

judo club 2012A judo expert who has represented the UK will coach the islands’ competitors at the sports hall over the next four days.

29-year-old Stuart Pateman has made the Great Britain BJA Junior squad. He’s won gold medals on six occasions.

This weekend, as the club grades its members, he’ll encourage youngsters to try and achieve his level of success.

Stuart says they can get there if they train hard, show commitment and listen to their coaches.

He’s based in Leicestershire and he accepts that there are additional travel challenges and costs for islanders who want to take their judo to a higher competitive level.

And with success comes sacrifices. He used to train for up to six days a week in order to reach the national team, but he’ll do all he can to help.

Club member Dave Stone has asked Stuart to help members develop their judo skills. He’ll take the younger members through some key techniques, while he’ll introduce more competitive moves for the seniors.

Stuart says his trip today will be his first time in Scilly and he’s been keen to visit because he’s heard a great deal about the club.

He’s aware of the success of Dave Stone’s son Harry at the national level and thinks the club is doing well with their limited resources.
