Partnership Targets German-Speaking Tourist Market

busy hugh street with visitorsThe Islands’ Partnership is sending flyers promoting Scilly to the world’s leading travel show – the ITB in Berlin.

And the move is being welcomed by the Westcountry’s expert in targeting visitors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Niall MacDougall operates a German-language site, which promotes holidays in Scilly and Cornwall.

Niall says this is an important market as VisitCornwall figures show that Germans spend 50% more than domestic visitors when on holiday in our region.

Niall has been in talks with the IP and their predecessor Island Marketing to encourage Scilly’s tourism bodies to make the German-speaking market our overseas priority.

But he warns that it can be difficult to get noticed at these massive trade events, especially when some destinations load attendees with attention-grabbing freebies. The Australian stand gives away a free koala bear soft toy, for example.

Niall led a delegation of German travel agents to experience Scilly at first hand last summer. He says it has led to a firm proposal for two groups to visit this season.

His company is now involved in a new project to target members of the 500,000 clubs and societies in Germany that often travel abroad to follow their interests.
