Community Day Centre Trial Ends Early

The Council’s community day centre trial has ended early because few islanders used it.

Last spring, Adult Social Services announced plans to open up the Memory Café Room at Carn Gwaval as a space offering social interaction for older adults and their carers on the islands.

Council management said that the informal drop in centre would be open two days a week. Rather than providing structured activity, it was hoped that islanders would call in for a cup of tea, to read the paper, play cards, or just socialise in a safe space.

The plans also included some light exercise sessions.

But a Town Hall spokesman tells Radio Scilly that the project was scrapped after just three months following “a low level of interest” in it by potential users.

The Council say they have “exciting plans for an alternative service” in the future. They can’t reveal what they are yet.
